Hemp is one of the most generous fibres we know. It asks little of the soil, it enriches the ground as it grows, and it needs far less water than most crops. Organic cotton keeps the hand soft and familiar. Together they make a denim that feels honest as well as beautiful.

Organic cotton

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, from seed that has not been genetically modified. Farmers keep the soil alive with crop rotation and compost instead of chemistry, and living soil holds water better, so the fields can rely more on rain and less on irrigation.

You feel the difference in the hand. Gentle handling keeps the fibres long and intact, and long fibres spin into a smoother, softer yarn that becomes even more comfortable with every wash. In our denim, organic cotton carries the softness. It gives the cloth its familiar feel from the first day you wear it.

Hemp

Field of industrial hemp growing in summer

Hemp is one of the oldest fibre plants in the world, and one of the least demanding. It reaches its full height in roughly three months, grows so densely that weeds find no room to take hold, and usually gets by without any synthetic pesticides. Its long roots loosen the earth, and the leaves that fall back onto the field return nutrients to the ground, which is why hemp tends to leave a field in better condition than it found it.

The fibre itself is remarkable. Hemp is among the strongest natural fibres, it is naturally breathable, and it absorbs and releases moisture quickly, which keeps the fabric cool in summer and comfortable in winter. It starts out firm and softens with every wash without losing its strength.

Why we blend them

Each fibre gives what the other lacks. Cotton alone makes a soft denim that loses its shape over time. Hemp alone makes a strong denim that can feel stiff at first. At 68 to 32, the cloth keeps the softness of cotton and gains the backbone of hemp, so the jeans hold their form, resist wear at the seams and knees, and grow more personal the longer you live in them.

At 315 g/m2 the denim sits in the middle, substantial enough for winter and open enough for summer, which is exactly what a garment should be if you intend to keep it for years.

Provenance and care

We are transparent about where it comes from. The denim is woven in Turkey and every garment is crafted in Italy.

Care for it slowly. Wash cold, wash rarely, and let it dry in the air. The fabric needs no more than that, and every wash will leave it a little softer than before.
